Paulin Nuotclà

Paulin Nuotclà is a celebrated Engadin artist and cultural polymath: singer-songwriter, illustrator, restorer, teacher, and master of sgraffito. A pioneer of Romansh rock since the 1970s, he has long bridged popular music and visual craft, earning recognition across Graubünden (Grisons) and beyond. Today, Nuotclà’s studio practice centers on sgraffito. It is Engadin’s centuries-old façade art where motifs are drawn by “scratching” through fresh plaster to reveal contrasting layers beneath. Across the valley’s villages this technique shapes the visual identity of homes and public buildings. Nuotclà has helped preserve and refresh that language through restorations and new commissions across the region. Alongside his work with buildings, Nuotclà creates standalone sgraffito artworks bringing the depth, light, and symbolism of this Alpine craft onto portable surfaces.
