Rae George is a York based painter whose work reimagines the rich tradition of floral painting through a contemporary lens. Working primarily in oil, she draws inspiration from seventeenth century Dutch masters while embracing expressive mark making, vibrant colour and personal storytelling.
Flowers act as both subject and symbol within her work, exploring themes of resilience, transformation, intimacy and lived experience. Through this approach, George transforms a historically decorative genre into a space for reflection, connection and contemporary feminist thought.
Alongside her studio practice, George is a published writer on women's art history, teaches life drawing and lectures in higher education. Her work is held in private collections across the UK.
Artist Statement
My work explores feminine resilience and the quiet power found in everyday beauty. Rooted in both art history and lived experience, I paint with a focus on transformation, vulnerability, and the strength to begin again. Drawing on influences from Dutch Golden Age floral traditions to contemporary feminist thought, my paintings combine layered oil techniques with a symbolic, often gestural approach. Each piece invites contemplation — where the decorative becomes powerful, and the fragile becomes enduring.
