Kareem Baquai is a Yorkshire based artist working across painting, printmaking and mixed media. His practice explores change, identity, memory and the tensions of contemporary life through layered surfaces, expressive mark making and fragments of text.
Originally trained in graphic design at the London College of Printing, Baquai spent more than thirty five years working in branding and packaging design across London, Amsterdam and Yorkshire. This background continues to shape his artistic practice through a strong sense of composition, visual communication and the use of text as both image and material.
After leaving his role leading an in house design team at Taylors of Harrogate in 2024, Baquai returned to painting and printmaking as a way of reconnecting with analogue processes and the physical act of making. His work reflects on the challenges of living through periods of rapid change, exploring the relationship between tradition and progress, certainty and uncertainty, and the evolving nature of the human experience.
